When a CEO has been at the helm of a company for as long as Dis-Chem's Ivan Saltzman has you would be hard pressed to find anyone who wouldn't want them to stay on in some form when they retired.
But while there is no doubt at all about the continued need for Saltzman's guidance at the group, a strong argument can be made against him taking on an executive role at the group when he steps down as CEO at the end of June. But his role was clearly defined as non-executive, giving incoming CEO Pieter Engelbrecht the space to chart his own course.
