A factory Rivian R1S SUV is the first fully electric production EV to conquer the Rubicon Trail, according to Rivian. Are we surprised? No.
Since you're probably dying to know if the Rivian um, died, on the trail—no, it apparently did not. Rivian reports that the R1S electric SUV entered the trail with about 80 percent charge and finished with under 10 percent, reportedly using about 75 percent of the total 135-kWh battery pack energy. Here's the kicker, though—it was only 12 miles long. As with ICE-powered equivalents, intense off-roading and rock crawling is not exactly fuel efficient.
With the exception of steel rock sliders, front tow hitch receivers, and a roof rack loaded with recovery equipment and a spare tire—all additions that made the 7,000-pound electric SUV even heavier—the Rivian R1S was entirely stock, down to the 34-inch Pirelli all-terrain tires. The Rivian team claimed they had no mechanical issues or tire changes, but did admit to some hard-fought battle bumps and scrapes, the positive spin on the term otherwise referred to as body damage.
