Chlamydia made up more than half of sexually transmitted infections with rates increasing at about 4% in 2021.An alarming rise in infections passed from pregnant moms to babies developing in the womb were also reported.
Researchers said there are a number of reasons for the overall rise in cases, but the pandemic made it worse. The lack of access to health care, including testing and treatment for STIs can make it difficult for people to get the care they need. STIs affect everyone, but the data from 2021 shows case rates are disproportionately high among gay and bisexual men, those who are younger and those who are Black.
