The venomous sea creatures have been found recently on Mustang Island, near Port Aransas and Corpus Christi.

Beachgoers, beware: Stinging centipede-like sea creatures are washing up on Texas shores. Bearded fireworms, a type of aquatic worm, have been found on logs on Mustang Island , near Corpus Christi , according to the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies. “Your worst nightmares are washing up right now,” the institute said in a post on Facebook . “The fireworms get their name because of the pain they inflict on anyone that dares to touch them,” the post said.

The sting site can feel sensitive for weeks after, the research institute said. The worms are covered in white bristles, which are hollow, filled with a neurotoxin and break off when touched, the institute said. Fireworms are “voracious predators,” according to the nonprofit MarineBio Conservation Society. They feed on soft and hard corals, anemones and small crustaceans. They will also eat squids, clams, shrimp and mussels.
