The deadline to claim tax refunds from 2019 is around the corner for those still owed money from the government.
The IRS urged people across the nation to file a tax return for the tax year 2019 by the July 17 deadline, noting that 1.5 million people have unclaimed federal refunds, as explained in a press statement."Many people may have overlooked filing a 2019 tax return due to the pandemic,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a press release last week.
The IRS issued relief for some 2019 and 2020 returns who may have struggled to file on time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, offering a waiver of relevant return penalties. However, the deadline is approaching, and the Treasury will keep the money from those who do not file on time. “We don't want people to miss their window to receive their refund,” Werfel said. “We encourage people to check their records and act quickly before the deadline. The IRS has several important ways that people can get help."The refund amount each tax filler will receive depends on a household's tax status. The IRS estimates that California and Texas each have over 100,000 people that may be entitled to a tax refund.
The IRS outlined how taxpayers can obtain key documents for their 2019 forms by either requesting copies from their employer or bank or ordering an income transcript through the IRS official government website.
