Los Angeles County, California, residents have until tonight to apply for a guaranteed income program that will provide monthly payments of $1,000 for two years.
The program, known as Breathe, will select 200 applicants who are former foster children to receive the payments. The application period opened on June 20 and will close today at 11:59 p.m., according to the program's webpage.To be eligible for this program, applicants must be at least 21 years old and not turn 24 before Sept. 1. Applicants must also be former Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services foster youth who were in care on or after their 18th birthday.
Other requirements include having a household income at or below 100% of the area median income for a single-person household or 120% for a household of two or more people. They also must have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and may not be enrolled in another guaranteed income program.
Last year, the same program selected 1,000 people to receive $1,000 every month for three years. Now, the program is adding 200 people who will receive the same amount every month for two years, a Los Angeles County spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.The University of Pennsylvania and other research partners will conduct a randomized control study to measure the outcomes of the program.
