It’s been only a year since Hurricane Helene hammered the southeast U.S. from Florida to the Carolinas. The worst wreckage has been cleared away, but cleanup crews are still at work plucking smaller debris from waterways throughout the region.
Most of Alabama’s high schools have reached the midpoint of the 2025 football season and it’s obvious there ain’t been many post-game celebrations by the five Coffee County high schools.This week, New Brockton hosts Monroe County , Kinston travels to Samson , Elba travels to Goshen and Enterprise and Zion Chapel are idle.
Can’t remember exact dates, but starting nationally in 1961, boys and girls, ages 6-15, could go to assigned fields to exhibit their skills as they began climbing tiers in the Ford Motor Co./National Football League Punt, Pass & Kick competition for FREE. It was fun to watch local hopefuls at Enterprise High School’s practice field showcase their skills, hopeful of advancing to later rounds and possible national championships that involved college scholarships. The competition also alerted attentive junior high and high school coaches to latent talent that might otherwise go unnoticed. Ever heard a football coach say, “our punter simply kicked the ball too high and too far,” “our kickoff guy drilled the ball into the end zone too often” or “our quarterbacks’ passes were too accurate, too easy to catch and thrown too far?” Old timers hereabouts could again enjoy watching gridiron hopefuls from our six elementary, two junior high schools and EHS display their individual skills; semi-final competition in R.L.
