Terry and Candace Stevens started planting okra in their backyard as a hobby, but their plant has now grown to 19.34 feet tall, potentially making it the tallest okra plant in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Planting okra in their home garden started as a new hobby for Mobile residents Terry and Candace Stevens, but it quickly grew much bigger.Still growing strong, up some three feet in just the last month.
Standing tall in Terry and Candace Stevens’ backyard garden, planting okra started out as a hobby, but now their goal is to put this plant in the Guinness Book of World Records.“I just couldn’t believe it,” Stevens said. “It just kept coming and the storms was coming and blowing it everywhere. I started getting nervous and then here it is.
Now, with the help of Alabama Cooperative Extension and Auburn University, Stevens’ plant could beat the world record by multiple feet. “This okra plant is 19.34 feet which is about 5.89 meters,” said Regional Extension Agent for Alabama Extension Jacob Kelley. “This is a unique specimen, never seen anything close to this height.”With a cold front moving in, this could be the plant’s biggest challenge yet.
Despite the risk, Stevens told me their Thanksgiving table will be stocked with okra, whether it’s a world record or not.
