Following the landmark success of their 1998 film Saving Private Ryan, director Steven Spielberg and star Tom Hanks partnered up as executive producers on the epic HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, which debuted to considerable acclaim in 2001.
The show remains immensely popular even today and has since inspired two spiritual successors. The more recent of the two, Masters of the Air, was released to positive reviews on Apple TV a couple of years ago. But the middle installment, The Pacific, is now gaining steam on streaming, a full 15 years after its initial release on HBO. According to FlixPatrol, The Pacific was among the five most-watched shows on the domestic iTunes charts on November 5, behind Arcane, Modern Family, and Little House on the Prairie. The epic World War II miniseries beat out fellow HBO titles such as Task and Euphoria. Set in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII, the show starred an ensemble cast including James Badge Dale, Joseph Mazzello, Jon Bernthal, and future Oscar winner Rami Malek. The 10-episode series was produced on a reported budget of more than $200 million, and received positive reviews for its darker tone compared to Band of Brothers. The Pacific currently sits at a"certified fresh" 89% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads,"An honest, albeit horrifying, exploration of World War II, The Pacific is a visually stunning miniseries not for the faint of heart." By comparison, Band of Brothers holds a 94% score on RT, while Masters of the Air — the show starred Austin Butler and Callum Turner — holds an 85% score on the aggregator. Saving Private Ryan grossed more than $480 million worldwide and is largely credited for reviving World War II cinema. Tom Hanks Also Starred in the World War II Hit 'Greyhound' Hanks' fascination with the era continued with Greyhound, which was also released on Apple TV. The movie featured him as a sea captain caught in the middle of an intense sneak attack in one of the most dangerous arenas of the Atlantic. Greyhound has proven to be massively successful, having spent over 600 days in the Apple TV top 10 charts.
