Auburn coach takes responsibility for exhibition defeat but remains optimistic with 'a lot of things that are controllable' to fix before season opener.

The Cowboys had three players finish with over 20 points scored as Auburn was led by Keyshawn Hall’s 26 points. “Obviously, very competitive game. Defensively, we just aren’t where we need to be. One of the things we talked about going into this game is if we win by 20, you can’t overreact.

If we lose by 20, you can’t overreact. Can’t overreact to one result,” Pearl said postgame. “Obviously, we play the game to win the game. Disappointed that we weren’t able to come out and beat a good but a shorthanded Oklahoma State team. They had a couple of guys missing out of their rotation, which allowed those guards to play extended minutes and really go out there and perform.”Oklahoma State shot 48% from the floor, and in overtime, the Cowboys shot 50% from beyond the arc. Auburn shot 36% for the game and 30% from 3-point range. However, Pearl was more focused on his group’s defensive effort and improving on that end of the ball. “We’ve got to do a better job of drilling and giving more help defensively. But also, like, when they had ball screens, we should’ve been blitzing those ball screens every time, and we didn’t,” Pearl said. So, that’s 100% on me and on the staff. We didn’t have our guys prepared defensively to come out here and execute."Pearl wants his group to step up the tempo defensively for that game, so they enter the season confident ahead of the home opener against Bethune-Cookman Nov. 3. “We have two weeks now to grow and get ready for a Memphis team who’s really talented and really good. If we guard like that against Memphis, it’s going to be a different outcome, so we’ve got to do a much better job of locking in the details and just continue to build and continue to grow,” Pearl said. “A lot of positives that can come out of this, but at the same time, as we figured, we learned a lot about our team,” Pearl added. “But I think one of the encouraging things is there’s a lot of things that are controllable, a lot of things that we can fix. But the fans gave us a great advantage and gave us a boost to life.” If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
