After brokering detente between Iran and the Saudis, China could perhaps help in Ukraine
It was announced last week that Iran and Saudi Arabia, the two goliaths in the Middle East that have been butting heads over the past few years, will re-establish diplomatic relations and have ambassadors reappointed within two months. Yet there are thorny issues between the two sides, not the least of which is the proxy war the two are fighting in Yemen.
Negotiations have been ongoing for some time, facilitated by Iraq. But it was interesting to see the two sides — represented by Saudi minister of state and national security adviser Musaed bin Al Aiban and Iranian Supreme National Security Council secretary Ali Shamkhani — shaking hands in front of the press in Beijing together with Wang Yi, director of the office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chinese Communist Party.

Children Who Survived Sexual Attacks Not Heard in NigeriaViolence against children is a global problem. A 2020 Global Status Report revealed that every year, almost one billion children globally encounter some form of violence, such as neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse, writes Steven Kator Iorfa, James Edem Effiong, and Tanya Johri for The Conversation. The Nigerian government has policies aimed at addressing the varying forms of violence against children, as well as strategies to provide care, rehabilitation, and reintegration of survivors. Protection for children is legislated in the Child's Rights Act 2003. But a UNICEF report based on 2014 figures says one in four Nigerian girls and one in 10 Nigerian boys have been sexually abused. A study explored the subjective experiences of female adolescent survivors of child sexual violence who tried reporting their experiences to adults. The study found the victims were sometimes discouraged from speaking out and were even blamed for what had happened to them. Adults should learn to give children safe spaces where they can be heard, understood, believed, and supported, added Steven Kator Iorfa, James Edem Effiong, and Tanya Johri.

South Sudan Peace Deal Under Threat? When the country's President Salva Kiir made changes to the Cabinet, most South Sudanese just took it as one of the many decrees from the head of state usually read out on state television. But opposition leader in Juba's transitional unity government Riek Machar says Kiir's firing of Defense Minister Angelina Teny was a violation of the 2018 peace deal that ended South Sudan's civil war. Teny is also Machar's wife. "Bringing peace in South Sudan is not a one-man show," Puok Baluang, press secretary in Marchar's office, said. "It is a collective effort of all South Sudanese and parties. We look forward to seeing a positive response from the president to revoke the decree and the presidential order and to commit himself, and his party, to the implementation of the peace agreement in letter and spirit." The term of the current unity government was originally set to expire in 2022. Last year, all parties to the agreement extended the mandate by a further two years until December 2024, when the country is set to hold its first general election.
