Former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. took issue with Cam Newton's recent description of the Panthers' locker room before Newton's arrival in 2011, calling it 'disrespectful'. Newton, in a podcast appearance, referred to the team's 2010 record of 2-14 and stated that players 'didn't know how to win'. Smith, who played on that 2010 team, defended his former teammates and criticized Newton's comments.
Former Carolina Panthers star wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. publicly criticized ex-teammate Cam Newton for calling the Panthers 'losers' before Newton's arrival in 2011 as the No. 1 overall draft pick. Newton, appearing on a podcast featuring University of Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, discussed the pressures Hunter might face if selected as the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Newton stated, 'You could potentially be the first pick, but, bro, you have no way of impacting the game the way a quarterback does,' adding, 'My issue is that, when I was the first pick, I went into a locker room of losers. Just honest. Guys didn't know how to win; guys didn't know how to prepare. They didn't take themselves serious to realize we was 2-14. There was a lot of 2-14 in the mentality of those guys.'Smith, widely regarded as the most productive receiver in Panthers history and a 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist, took exception to Newton's comments. He was a member of the 2010 Panthers team that finished 2-14 and struggled due to quarterback inconsistency. Smith responded on X (formerly Twitter) writing, '53 man locker room - 1=52 losers. Wow… breaking news to 89,' followed by an angry emoji. Smith, who later became an analyst for the NFL Network, continued his critique in a subsequent post: 'I've watched & listened from a far as U @CameronNewton talk about @Panthers! None of us are perfect. Yes We were 2-14 before you blessed us w ur presence. The way you have talked about @panthers lately I'm very disappointed. I wish u nothing but the very best. I'm done!!!'Newton and Smith played three seasons together in Carolina (2011-13), with their relationship marked by occasional friction. Newton's impactful arrival led to the Panthers' transformation into a winning franchise, culminating in a Super Bowl 50 appearance in 2015. However, Newton's performance in that game, particularly his decision not to jump on a fumble, drew widespread criticism. Newton spent ten of his eleven seasons with the Panthers, leaving behind franchise records for passing yards and touchdown passes. Despite the public clash, Smith defended his past criticisms of the Panthers, stating he never shied away from his words but considered calling the team's players 'losers' disrespectful. Newton has not yet publicly responded to Smith's comments
