It's expected to sell for seven figures when it goes over the block.
Neither Steve McQueen nor the Shelby Cobra need any sort of big introduction. They're each legends, and they happen to share a bit of history. The Hollywood icon drove an example of the historic sports car for a few years. Now, it's headed to auction at Monterey Car Week. This is an original 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra Roadster. That alone makes it worth a boatload of cash. The last two to sell over on Bring a Trailer went for $900,000 and $925,000 respectively.
Then, Wolper sold it to Elmer Bernstein, a composer of films like The Ten Commandments, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Great Escape. Mecum says that McQueen continued to drive it until Bernstein sold it in late 1967 to Richard A. Mathis who allowed Steve to continue driving it for a time before ultimately taking ownership. Since then, it's been around the world including stops in Switzerland and the U.K. Now, it's back in America and going up for sale on August 16 in Monterey.
