Steve Bannon, a former Trump White House advisor, admitted to defrauding donors who contributed to a campaign to build a border wall. Under a plea agreement, he avoids jail time but faces restrictions on his future involvement in charitable organizations.
Former Trump White House adviser Steve Bannon pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony fraud for his role in defrauding donors who contributed to a fundraising campaign aimed at building a wall along the US-Mexico border. As part of a plea agreement , Bannon will not face any jail time. He was sentenced to three years of conditional discharge and barred from serving as an officer or director of any charitable organization in New York state.
This includes fundraising or not-for-profit organizations, and he is prohibited from receiving or holding assets for such groups. Bannon is also immune from arrest during this period.Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, whose office brought the charges against Bannon, stated that the resolution achieved the primary goal of protecting New York's charities and charitable giving from fraud. Bannon, however, expressed no remorse after the court proceedings and denounced Bragg and New York Attorney General Letitia James as an 'existential threat' to the Trump administration. He called for immediate criminal investigations into both individuals.Bannon was initially charged in August 2022 with six counts of money laundering, conspiracy, and a scheme to defraud. He had pleaded not guilty at the time, characterizing the case as 'partisan political weaponization of the criminal justice system.' Prosecutors alleged that Bannon and others defrauded contributors who donated over $15 million in 2019 to the 'We Build the Wall' campaign. They claimed that Bannon misrepresented the use of funds, promising that 100% would go towards wall construction, while using a portion for personal expenses and payments to the organization's president. Federal authorities also revealed that Bannon used his nonprofit organization to receive over $1 million in wall-building funds, diverting some of it for his own purposes. Bannon's trial was scheduled for March 4th, but the plea agreement averted it. Notably, Trump could not pardon Bannon for these state charges.
