Albini is one of the most notable record producers and audio engineers of his era, producing famous records like Pixies’ “Surfer Rosa,” Nirvana’s “In Utero,” as well as Jimmy Page and Robert Plant’s “Walking Into Clarksdale” among countless others.
The Pasadena native also fronted various bands, including Big Black, Rapeman and Flour while serving as a band member in Shellac. Albini was known for being strongly opposed to the concept of record producers, referring to himself as an audio engineer and believing that his role was to fix problems, not take over recording sessions. He was also a proponent of analog recording, and wrote a well-regarded essayAlso an avid poker player, Albini placed 12th in the 2013 World Series of Poker Seniors Championship and won a WSOP gold bracelet in seven-card stud in 2018.
He also worked on records for bands and artists like Bush, Cheap Trick, Joanna Newsom, Jarvis Cocker, PJ Harvey, The Frames, The Breeders, Slint, Veruca Salt, Smog, Cloud Nothings, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Magnolia Electric Company, Screaming Females and Ty Segall. He was producing records as recently as this year, including a pair of metal albums by Code Orange and Liturgy, and Shellac was preparing to tour its first album in a decade “To All Trains,” scheduled to release next week.: “steve touched countless lives and changed mine and many others for the better. a genuine, singular, principled person. spent the last 40 years helping people make art. there’s no reason for him to be gone and the world is less interesting without him. just a really sad day.
