Stephen King has shared his thoughts on the in-development IT prequel series at HBO Max. 'It’s an interesting possibility to do that. They talked about a prequel. Which struck me as an okay idea.'
Though he may be down the terrifying clown, Stephen King is interested in what the future holds for the IT franchise. King's 1986 novel was set in the fictional town of Derry, Maine and revolved around a group of young kids nicknamed The Losers Club who learn of a terrifying presence in their town feeding on children. Primarily seen as Pennywise the Clown, the kids struggle to find a way to put the evil to rest for good, even as they return 27 years later upon IT's reawakening.
Considered one of King's most iconic novels, IT has been adapted for the screen multiple times, beginning with the Tim Curry-starring miniseries which, despite mixed reviews from critics, has gone on to enjoy a cult following since its 1990 premiere. The novel found much better appreciation the second time around with the Andy Muschietti-helmed IT movie, which was split into two parts covering both halves of the novel.
“I think that when I die I will kind of disappear from the paperback racks. But that f----ng clown is going to live forever. Well, I don’t have a relationship to Pennywise now. Because I have no intention of going back to IT… it’s in the hands of people who are doing this… Andy and Barbara [Muschietti] are going to do ‘Welcome to Derry,’ they’re talking about it anyway. And they’ve got sort of a handshake deal, I think, with HBO Max. It’s an interesting possibility to do that.
News of the IT prequel series at HBO Max broke earlier this year with Andy Muschietti set to direct the pilot and executive produce while Wonder Woman's Jason Fuchs would pen all the episodes for the show. The series, entitled Welcome to Derry, is expected to take place in the 1960s, falling in line with IT's 27-year hibernation cycle, and will reportedly explore the evil entity's origin story.
King's reaction to the IT prequel series at HBO Max falls in line with that of many fans of the novel and Muschietti's films. While The Flash director infused a better sense of terror in his adaptations, the idea of explicitly explaining Pennywise's origin does risk ruining some of the terrifying mystery of its being, especially after the heavy exposition drops seen in IT Chapter Two, making the show feel like nothing more than"an okay idea" in the eyes of many.
