Stephen King has famously only directed once, but his scrapped plan to helm another adaptation of his books could have transformed his career.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Stephen King came close to helming an adaptation of one of his most infamous books, which could have launched a whole new phase in his career. To date, King's only credit behind the camera is 1986's Maximum Overdrive, where a diner is besieged by sentient killer trucks.
Ironically, Maximum Overdrive proved to be one of the worst Stephen King movie adaptations, with star Emilio Estevez even disowning the film following its release. When it went into production, King was also at the height of his addiction to cocaine and alcohol, which he admitted affected his work on Maximum Overdrive.
King's work on Maximum Overdrive was compromised by his addictions, but in both his subsequent screenplays and work as a producer, he's shown a keen understanding of the filmmaking process. Rather than a film that contained a lot of exploding trucks and action like his first movie, Gerald's Game would have been a small-scale chamber piece.
Stephen King's 1999 Accident Made Him Abandon Gerald's Game Alas, King's planned second directing gig didn't come to pass. Garris explained in the aforementioned interview that the author dropped the notion of directing Gerald's Game following his horrific 1999 hit-and-run accident. This left the author with broken ribs, a head injury and he almost had to have his right leg amputated.
What King Thought Of Mike Flanagan's Gerald's Game Movie Close That said, the ending of Flanagan's Gerald's Game movie proved somewhat divisive, with some viewers and critics finding the last ten minutes unnecessary. Still, the film received a broadly positive reaction, especially thanks to the central performance by Carla Gugino.
