ESPN's Stephen A. Smith distills his competitive ethos in his new memoir—and hopes it can inspire the next Stephen A.
It wasn’t so much the tweet. It was the timing of it. What happened the next day is of no surprise. Shannon Sharpe is a Hall of Famer, one of the greatest tight ends in the history of football, who I genuinely like and respect by the way. I know what the game of football and the people who play it mean to him. And I know, and this is just based off of my knowledge of Skip, not talking to anybody, just knowing Skip the way that I do. I know that the next day Skip gonna wanna talk football.
The more cynical view would be that Skip does understand all of that and that’s the point. Instead of talking about Hamlin and player safety and the NFL, we’re talking about Skip andWell, you could say he understands that. But Skip is fixated on sports. He has an audience that understands that. I don’t think for one second that Skip Bayless said, I don’t give a damn about the kid, let’s talk football. I don’t believe that for one second.
They ask my advice about everything. I mean, not every player, not most of them, but quite a few. And they’re stars and they would never want anybody to know that they call me for my advice. And I’d never tell. But I’m happy to give it to them. I’m proud of them. And to be honest with you, I’m grateful too. Without them, where would I be? If I didn’t have them to celebrate, to malign, to praise, to question, or whatever the case may be … you need their assistance as well.
And what I try to make sure the world understands is that I’m talking about the game for our audience. This is what they do for a living. I have to dissect what we’re watching. But please don’t get it twisted and think that I’m talking about their character in any way. These are some great dudes that do a lot for the community. And my gratitude is endless towards them, and always will be.
