Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is one of Weehawken’s most underappreciated architectural originals.
I sit — any slight movement in the pew setting off echoes in the sanctuary of, one of Weehawken’s most underappreciated architectural originals, at the northeast corner of Park Avenue and Columbia Terrace — watching century-old vitreous lancets arraying, in imperceptible solar time, across double-aisle bays, recessed ambries and anterooms, and sequestered choir and organ console lofts.
The church gloom pressing into my senses is somniferous, corporeal, felt like a touch to the arm. I rise, drawn to spectral soundings — doors knocked on, stones being moved, water dripping, winds swirling, children filled with laughter — cached in the windows themselves. I count six three-light lancets facing each other across Good Shepherd’s sacrarium grid.
Installed in Good Shepherd’s narthex in 1929, the Necker Windows were executed by A.L. Brink, New York, and dedicated as a left-to-right triptych — “Let Us Worship,” “Christ the King,” “Holy, Holy, Holy” — from Arthur M. Necker to his father, William Necker . Owner and operator of a vast chain of all-in-one funeral parlors — “William Necker, Inc.
Installed in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church's north aisle in 1922, the Klaus Window was executed by Joseph G. Lamb Associates, New York City. Dedicated as “Christ and the Children” from her mother and father to Ruth Klaus , also known as “Baby Ruth,” as it is inscribed in the window. Her father, Dr. Henry Klaus , was a prominent Weehawken surgeon and was instrumental in building the North Hudson Hospital on Park Avenue directly across the street from Good Shepherd.
