Stellantis announced plans to invest in US manufacturing, including the production of a new midsize truck at the Belvidere plant and the continuation of Durango production in Detroit.
Stellantis has unveiled its strategy for US manufacturing, outlining key investments and product plans in a memo sent to employees. The memo, signed by Antonio Filosa, Stellantis ' Chief Operating Officer for Americas and U.S. Brands, highlights the company's commitment to increasing market share and growing sales volume through multibillion-dollar investments in its workforce, products, and technology.
The memo confirms that a new midsize truck will be produced at the idled Belvidere plant in Illinois, marking the return of around 1,500 employees. The next generation Dodge Durango will be built in Detroit, with additional investments planned for Toledo and Kokomo.Stellantis Chairman John Elkann recently met with President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss the company's future plans for US production. The memo, obtained by Auto News through its Crain's Chicago Business affiliate, emphasizes the company's renewed commitment to US manufacturing following the meeting. The memo states that the company's plans include significant investments in its people, products, and technology, all within the US. The Belvidere plant, which has been idle since the discontinuation of the Jeep Cherokee, is set to reopen for midsize truck production. This move signals that Stellantis is moving forward with the $1.5 billion investment promised in its 2023 contract with the UAW. The memo also confirms that the next generation Dodge Durango will continue to be produced in Detroit, dismissing previous rumors of relocation abroad. The UAW had accused Stellantis of attempting to move production outside the US, which they argued would have violated the labor contract signed in November 2023
