The Pittsburgh Steelers will try to succeed where so many others have failed this season when they face Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley currently leads the NFL in rushing and is threatening the single-season rushing mark set by Eric Dickerson 40 years ago.
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley runs with the ball during the first half of an NFL football game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, in Philadelphia. Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy reacts after completing a first down reception in front of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen in the first half of an NFL football game, Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024, in Cleveland.
Most teams haven’t this season, though Pittsburgh and the NFL’s fourth-ranked rush defense believes it has the tools to be the exception. Tools like inside linebacker Elandon Roberts, who has carved out a niche as an old-school run stopper over the last decade, or “tooth chipper,” as Tomlin put it earlier this season.
He’s hardly the only one on a defense that has slowed down Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry, Nick Chubb and J.K. Dobbins among others this season. “Everybody’s got to do their job,” Queen said. “That’s really all it comes to. I think some teams are just unaware of how good Saquon is. You’ve got to keep your focus.”earlier this season went viral, leading the makers of the “Madden NFL” video game series to incorporate it into an update the following week.“If you want to hit somebody, you’ve got to see what you’re hitting,” Queen said.
