An official visit to Notre Dame earlier this month was not enough to sway Steele star Jalen Cooper from his verbal commitment to SMU.
Cooper on Monday reaffirmed his intention to sign with SMU , stating his recruitment is now '1000% closed.' The senior receiver pledged to SMU in July, though an August scholarship offer from Notre Dame was compelling enough to make him consider playing instead for the Fighting Irish up in Indiana . While Cooper reportedly enjoyed his visit to Notre Dame , which included watching its 49-7 rout of Stanford on Oct. 12, he ultimately decided to stick with the Mustangs .
He helped lead the Knights to the Class 6A Division II semifinals and was named to the Class 6A All-State team. The 'Route King' – Cooper’s self-styled moniker – is again producing eye-popping numbers for Steele , the Express-News' top-ranked 6A team. Cooper leads Steele in total touchdowns , receiving touchdowns and receptions and ranks second in receiving yards . He's the only wideout in District 29-6A with at least 40 catches and double-digit scoring grabs.
