The announcement of the Steam Machine was initially very exciting, as gamers rallied around the idea of a console-esque piece of hardware released directly by Valve, that would be running the efficient and very popular SteamOS.
Much of that initial anticipation was quickly replaced by trepidation unfortunately, as the reality of the current market around PC components made many feel that either they wouldn't be able to deliver the Steam Machine at a reasonable cost, or they would have to delay it until prices settled down. Though there has been little in the way of updates from Valve since it's initial announcement, they have finally broken their temporary silence, and there is some good news about the release schedule for the Steam Machine, at the very least. The Steam Machine Is Still On Track To Launch This Year Over on the Steam Community site, Steamworks Development shared an official post reviewing the year they had in 2025. Whilst they obviously focused heavily on last year, they did confirm that they will be shipping three products this year, in the Steam Machine, new Steam Controller, and their lightweight VR headset, the Steam Frame. Though they wouldn't be drawn on exactly when that would be, they did address the elephant in the room, saying,"We shared recently that there have been challenges with memory and storage shortages, but we will be shipping all three products this year. More updates will be shared as we finalize our plans." It's an encouraging update, and if they can get the balance right, it still sounds like a brilliant product. Later in the post, they reiterated that the Steam Machine will be totally open, allowing players to also install other storefronts , as well as use it for productivity apps when not gaming. The Steam Machine Price Point Is Still A Thorny Topic As great as all of the above is, there is still the very sticky topic of how much it's going to cost. The early mooted requests from fans for $600 dollars or less feels very unlikely, given how much RAM alone costs, but the developer can still make it a tempting prospect if they can keep the price reasonable. Valve has already said that they won't subsidize the price, but if they're producing everything at immense scale in a similar fashion to the Steam Deck, then there is a world where they can deliver the Steam Machine that makes it worth buying over a normal gaming PC, particularly given that the latter is also beholden to 2026's busted component market.
