The Steam platform is a constantly evolving beast, and Valve has consistently made improvements in the interest of players over the years based primarily on community feedback. A potential update to one of Steam's core features could change things forever for a large number of gamers.

Steam has officially announced Steam Bullet Fest 2026, an event featuring Bullet Hell, and more significantly, Bullet Heaven games, and signaling a massive development in the way these games will be categorized on the platform. The event comes after a massive push by fans of the genre to have the Bullet Heaven tag officially added to Steam, etching out a brand-new category in a huge win for fans of indie games and indie developers writ large. Steam Officially Defines A New Category Bullet Fest 2026 Is A Genre-Defining Event While the official Bullet Heaven tag has still yet to be added to Steam's extensive list of tags, the newest announcement of Bullet Fest 2026 is a massive step in the right direction. The issue has been that Bullet Hell and Bullet Heaven games get lost among the roguelites they are often categorized alongside, and also that there is a distinct difference between what constitutes a Bullet Hell vs. Bullet Heaven game. Steam's Bullet Fest 2026 includes a detailed description of what qualifies in the genre, detailed in the Steamworks documentation here . The listing includes the following eligibility requirements for games in the genre: These new parameters for what qualifies in the Bullet genre are a major development on the platform, and is a major step forward for indie developers working on Bullet games whose work is often lost among the cavalcade of roguelites released every year. It's A Huge Win For Indie Devs Fans Of The Genre Are Hyped While there have been unofficial Bullet-type festivals hosted on Steam in the past, the official Bullet Fest 2026 will reach a much wider audience and feature games in the genre that have largely been overlooked up to now. The event itself is Steam's response to a widespread community push to have the Bullet Heaven tag officially added. Developers at Awesome Games Studios, a Poland-based indie studio that specializes in Bullet Hell and Heaven games, have recently taken to Reddit communities such as Megabonk to encourage players to add their own Bullet Heaven tag to the game in an effort to make the tag official. Apparently, if enough users input the same custom tag on a specific game, the tag can then be officially added to Steam's list. Awesome Games Studios say that Steam"noticed our push and announced an official festival for Bullet Hell & Bullet Heaven games, giving the genre its first real validation." While it's just the first step, devs think we "might be getting closer to real improvements in discoverability and categorization as well."
