Susan Ryan was the first female Labor minister and the first female minister for women during her career as part of the Hawke government in the 1980s.
A statue of late Labor senator Susan Ryan has been unveiled in the Senate Rose Garden at Old Parliament House in Canberra .
Ms Ryan's daughter Justine Butler said her mother would have loved the statue by sculptor Lis Johnson."It's just a beautiful, beautiful, serene place."The statue was unveiled on the 40th anniversary of the commencement of the Sex Discrimination Act, which Ms Ryan steered through parliament. In 2022, the ACT government announced an artwork had been commissioned to pay tribute to Ms Ryan — a statue to be created by a female or non-binary artist.The depiction of Ms Ryan is inspired by photographs of her speaking at a women's work rally in 1977, although some details of the statue are different to the photo.Ms Johnson said Ms Ryan had been a great role model who she hoped would inspire future generations.
Dame Quentin noted that research had shown that there were more statues in Australia of dogs and other animals than of women.Most statues in public places in Canberra are of men and were sculpted by men.
