The Western Cape police boss said that he is reinforcing an existing policy.

CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape police announced that statements submitted by members of the South African Police Service have to be in English because it makes it easier to work with documents presented in a court of law.

But citizens who lay complaints can do so in any of the 11 official languages as enshrined in the Constitution. Western Cape Police Commissioner Tembisile Petekile explained that when a document was translated to English, officials would have to read the translation back to the complainant to ensure accuracy."I didn't come up with something new, I reinforced an existing policy, which was promulgated in the South African Policy Number 1 in 2016. This policy provides that the working language for the police in all official documents shall be English.

"This is for working language within the SAPS [South African Police Service]. That excludes people that are coming to the police station - they use the language of their own choice to lay their complaints. But statements that are submitted by members of the Saps must be in English."
