A man who went missing deep in the Sussex County woods for 24 hours, a week before Christmas, is lucky to be alive.

Warming him up, with temperatures around freezing at the time, was among the immediate challenges. So the troopers — it is not clear how many responded to the scene — removed their blouse coats and put the clothing on top of him, according to a series of tweets from the New Jersey State Police recounting the incident.

Ballistic vests were placed under him, offering a layer of protection from the frozen ground. Troopers also took turns laying on top of him, in an attempt to provide body heat, the account said. The man, whose identity has not been released — his face is blurred on the video — was eventually removed from the woods with the assistance of the Sandyston Fire Department, and he continues to recover at home, police said.

Troopers located him by following his footprints in the snow. He had become separated from his walking stick and right boot.and support the local journalism you rely on and trust. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
