We can also understand the movement for Black lives as a reproductive justice issue because every person that is killed by police is someone’s son, daughter, and child. Each incident of the police murdering a young person means a mother is denied the ability to raise their child into adulthood. Sometimes, like the case of Colombo, police brutality results in a mother being denied the ability to even give birth to their child at all.
The fight against police brutality and institutionalized racism has to include and center women, and the fight for feminism and for reproductive justice has to be anti racist. Otherwise, we let women like Sandra Bland, Breonna Taylor, and Brianna Colombo slip through the cracks. The framework of reproductive justice helps us to understand the full weight of the effects of police brutality, and see how these struggles are inextricably linked.
