Mike Shaw was seriously hurt after he said he fell several feet down into his septic tank and he wants to bring awareness to this dangerous situation.

Representative Shaw said, just like most things, septic tanks have a shelf life that can range from 40 to 50 years, and they can deteriorate to the point where they collapse.

If you aren’t on a city or county sewer, a septic tank is used to process wastewater from your house. It was like any other evening for Shaw. He was walking past his septic tank and within seconds, fell straight in. “It was pretty scary because the fall was quick and then I kind of realized where I was and what was happening and I got out very quickly. I didn’t stay in there long,” Shaw said.Within 48 hours, he purchased a new tank, which he said was expensive, but much needed.

“Right now, I think the key is awareness. If you have a septic system, be aware. If it’s getting up there in years, you might want to have it inspected and serviced and looked at and if you need to, you might want to just bite the bullet and replace it because it could be dangerous,” Shaw said. Shaw plans to work with county health departments to develop funding to bring awareness to the community about their deteriorating septic tanks. His plan is to prevent this from happening to anyone else, especially a young child or a senior.
