Rebecca Long Bailey MP has said Parliament must urgently identify a mechanism for providing compensation for 1950s-born women.
Rebecca Long Bailey has called on the new Government to urgently identify a compensation plan for women born in the 1950s impacted by changes to their State Pension age. The Labour MP told the House of Commons that these women need “fair, fast, simple redress and an apology from the DWP ” adding that “there is no excuse for delay”.
“The issue now is not whether the women faced injustice; the Ombudsman’s report earlier this year made it clear that they did, that the Department for Work and Pensions was guilty of maladministration, that the women are entitled to urgent compensation from the Government, and that Parliament must urgently identify a mechanism for providing that appropriate remedy.
He continued: “That means simplifying the system. That will not please everyone, by the way; some people want a detailed analysis, but that is unfortunately likely to lead to obfuscation. It is very important, as she describes, to have a simple mechanism which delivers justice to these women speedily.”
“While we welcome the new legal duty of candour which will ensure Government departments hold their hands up when things go wrong, swift action to correct the disastrous mistakes of previous administrations was missing. The PHSO’s Rebecca Hilsenrath said: “Complainants should not have to wait and see whether DWP will take action to rectify its failings… Parliament now needs to act swiftly, and make sure a compensation scheme is established.”
