Shapiro administration officials visited Downtown Daily Bread in Harrisburg Thursday to recognize Hunger Action Month.

Central Pennsylvania Food Bank volunteer Steve Burkholder, Harrisburg, shrink-wraps boxes of food, loaded by volunteers./FILEState officials visited Harrisburg’s Downtown Daily Bread on Thursday in recognition of Hunger Action Month, encouraging Pennsylvanians to help their local food banks and other anti-hunger initiatives amid ominous signs of growing food security.

Many of those challenges are still being felt. While the U.S. economy quickly recovered from the pandemic with low unemployment and strong wage growth, it was accompanied by high inflation that has only recently showed signs of cooling. Downtown Daily Bread offers free hot meals every day - with most food sourced through Central Pennsylvania Food Bank - as well as a shelter for the homeless population that includes services such as mail delivery and assistance in applying for jobs and benefits.

Further, Lingenfelter said Thursday, most of the new clients have homes and jobs, but are simply coming in for meals due to growing financial insecurity, often stopping in for lunch in their work uniforms.
