Coach Brian Dutcher is searching for a veteran big man, but he's content going with the 11 scholarship players he has, five of which are unproven freshmen or sophomores

San Diego State received the scholarship paperwork for Campbell grad transfer Jay Pal earlier this week and officially added him to the basketball roster for the 2023-24 season.

Dutcher seems content rolling with what he has now. And unless a veteran, shot-swatting, 7-footer with the mobility to switch ball screens magically shakes loose over the next couple months, he might not have a choice. No matter what happens with the final two scholarships, the Aztecs figure to be a different team than the one that went 32-7, became the first Mountain West team to reach the Final Four and was down five with five minutes to go in the national championship game.

. He may not be the shot maker Bradley was, but he has shown the ability to score at all three levels and is considered an upgrade defensively., growing up in Omaha, Neb., then spending time at a post-grad academy in Atlanta, junior college in Texas, two seasons at Jacksonville State in Alabama and finally Campbell. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

But Dutcher, like Steve Fisher before him, has typically utilized an eight- or nine-man rotation, partly because the sheer physical demands of their defensive commitment make it difficult to log much more than 25 minutes. Meaning: As things stand now, at least two of the freshmen or sophomores will get time off the bench.

“I’m not worried about putting either one of them out there in game situations at critical times. There’s going to be a learning curve, but they’re talented and they’ve had a year in the program now. That one year under your belt makes a huge difference.”
