State of emergency declared in popular New Zealand holiday city

The mayor of popular New Zealand holiday destination Queenstown has declared a state of emergency after wild weather caused flooding and landslides.

Mayor Glyn Lewers made the declaration on Friday about 6:30am and it will last for an initial period of one week and comes a day after the same alert was put in effect across the wider Southland region.

Intense rain over the past 24 hours has caused mass flooding, with the council reporting debris being carried toward the city centre after causing damage to several homes. Mayor Lewers was keen to highlight the potential for the situation to change rapidly, as he urged locals and tourists to avoid travel and exercise"extreme care".
