The city is planning to build a new downtown convention center that could anchor a series of redevelopment projects in the area.Editor’s note: This story is part of a special report, “Decoding Downtown,” which examines the state of Downtown Dallas ahead of 2025.
Dallas officials believe their next entertainment district is downtown, anchored by a bigger, better, estimated $3 billion convention center. The city hopes to redevelop a large section of downtown from the Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station to the Dallas Farmers Market. The center of those plans is tearing down the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center and building a new 2.5-million-square-foot facility — a 500,000-square-foot increase — with more exhibition halls, meeting rooms and ballrooms nearby. The project broke ground in June with a planned 2029 opening.
Knocking down the current facility and having the building run along the west side of Lamar Street/Botham Jean Boulevard instead of over the roadway is expected to open up 30 acres of undeveloped land. City officials envision a new mixed-use entertainment district with hotels, restaurants, businesses and other amenities linking downtown to the Cedars and southern Dallas.
