Ohio legislators may soon reintroduce a bill targeting sexual misconduct by doctors. The move would follow a Dispatch investigation on the issue.

Gov. Mike DeWine and the State Medical Board of Ohio are pushing ahead with legislation to better protect patients from doctors who sexually abuse or harass those in their care.

If passed and signed into law, the version of Senate Bill 322 proposed in 2022 would require physicians on probation with the medical board for sexual misconduct to inform their patients. The legislation would permit the board to share the status of an investigation with a complainant. DeWine has praised the medical board for recent changes following a sexual abuse scandal at Ohio State University involving Dr. Richard Strauss. Strauss, who died by suicide in 2005, has been accused of sexually abusing at least 177 students and athletes during his time at Ohio State.

If reintroduced, the latest version of the legislation would follow a year-long investigation by The Columbus Dispatch into 42 years of sexual abuse and harassment by Ohio doctors and the medical board's handling of it.
