State DOJ investigating fatal San Diego police shooting of man in City Heights [Breaking]
The state Department of Justice is investigating a San Diego police shooting in City Heights last week that left— the department’s first investigation of a shooting by local law enforcement under a relatively new state law, officials said.
The man’s name had not been released as of Monday evening. The Sheriff’s Department was investigating the shooting in accordance with a countywide protocol that ensures local law enforcement agencies don’t investigate shootings by their own officers or deputies.Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Steffen said Monday that the gun, which officers apparently believed was a real firearm, “appears to be a BB or pellet gun.
It marks the first time the Department of Justice has stepped in to investigate a local police shooting since AB 1506 took effect, state and local officials said. The Department of Justice launched teams to investigate cases in accordance with the law in July 2021. When officers arrived, the man ran to an alley, where he again put a gun to his head and asked officers to shoot him, sheriff’s Lt. Kevin Ralph said last weekOn 42nd Street, the man “produced the gun,” and officers ordered him to drop it, Ralph said.The man was struck and fell to the ground. As he got up, with the gun in his hand, three officers shot him, Ralph said.
