A leaked document suggested the State Department planned to spend $400 million on electric armored vehicles from Tesla. The State Department has since denied these plans, stating the Tesla reference was an error and the project is now on hold.

The U.S. State Department has denied plans to purchase electric armored vehicles from Tesla , the company owned by Elon Musk , despite a previously leaked document suggesting otherwise. Scripps News obtained a State Department document through the internet archive Wayback Machine that revealed the agency's intention to spend $400 million in 2025 on armored electric vehicles, specifically mentioning Tesla .

The $400 million line item was added to the document on December 13 during the Biden Administration. Following the public release of the document on Wednesday, the State Department promptly removed any reference to Tesla.A State Department spokesperson clarified that the document never should have specified Tesla in its original procurement plans, which constitute the agency's annual wishlist of purchases for the upcoming fiscal year. The State Department official explained that the project was initiated as a request for information to gauge the interest of vehicle manufacturers in building armored electric vehicles. The department received a response only from Tesla. However, the entire project is now on hold, with the State Department stating they currently have no plans to purchase armored vehicles from Tesla or any other company
