This article analyzes Seniorly's ranking of the best and worst states for retirees, highlighting the challenges faced by Southern states in providing adequate healthcare and a high quality of life for seniors.

Several Southern states, including Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas, received low scores in Seniorly's healthcare metrics. These metrics encompass factors such as the number of doctors per area, Medicaid spending on long-term care, and the overall health of Medicare beneficiaries.

Florida, despite having the worst healthcare ranking in the US, managed to avoid a bottom spot in the overall rankings due to its relatively affordable cost of living, abundance of recreational activities, and large senior population.Alabama emerged as the state with the third-worst healthcare environment for retirees, according to Seniorly's findings. While New Jersey boasts miles of coastline, numerous shopping malls, and decent healthcare access for seniors, its high cost of living and substantial personal income tax rates dragged down its overall ranking. Although Social Security income is exempt from state taxation in New Jersey, the state carries the highest property tax in the nation, exceeding 2% effectively. Moreover, it holds the sixth-highest cost of living among all states, as per Missouri Economic Research and Information Center data utilized by Seniorly for its rankings. Massachusetts, with its high cost of living, second only to Hawaii, also contributed to its poor overall ranking. When it comes to quality of life for retirees, Texas ranked last according to Seniorly's evaluation. Although Texas enjoys a pleasant climate for most of the year, it has one of the smallest proportions of adults aged 65 and older, at just 13% of its population, as per U.S. Census Bureau data. In contrast, Montana, ranked as the best state to retire based on Seniorly's metrics, has nearly 20% of its population aged 65 and above. Texas also needs improvement in retiree healthcare. The United Health Foundation ranked it 38th for senior health, citing slightly higher rates of seniors living in poverty and experiencing food insecurity compared to the national average
