DENVER — With 17:40 left in the Stars’ 4-1 win over the league-leading Avalanche on Tuesday night, Jake Oettinger flashed a smile. Play was stopped. His...
The Stars’ second-year goaltender made a career-high 46 saves on Tuesday night, leading the Stars past a team that hadn’t lost in regulation in two months, and hadn’t done so at home in almost four. He steadied the Stars early during a poor start, and guided them late with 17 saves in the third period.
Joe Pavelski scored twice on the power play as part of his four-point night. Jason Robertson scored his fifth goal in the last five games, as Robertson, Pavelski and Roope Hintz are all tied for the team lead with 21 goals. Tyler Seguin sealed the game with an empty-net goal with 1:23 remaining, capping a three-point evening.Oettinger was the story of the night.
Oettinger was tactful while shorthanded, stopping all nine Avalanche shots. He was great jumping on rebounds, covering the puck 13 times to get whistles and defuse threats. Pavelski: “Jake was tremendous. Obviously, he’s been really good. He’s finding his game again. He’s just calming for us, when they’re pushing us. Penalty kills, he was our best killer tonight and made some big saves and guys played well in front of them.”
“I just want to show I can play with anyone,” Oettinger said. “I feel that personally and I think the people that are around me feel that I can play with the best. I just want to keep showing that. Obviously, tonight is just a small step in the right direction.”
