BOSTON — Tuesday night’s 3-1 loss to the Bruins did little to reveal much about the Stars as a team. They played even with first-place Boston for most of the...

Dallas Stars center Wyatt Johnston holds off Nashville Predators left wing Cole Smith during the third period of the home opener at the American Airlines Center, Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022 in Dallas. The Stars defeated the Predators 5-1.did little to reveal much about the Stars as a team.

Johnston scored the Stars’ only goal in Boston, an open-net tap-in set up by Ty Dellandrea’s dogged effort to win a puck, and center a pass while falling down. It was Johnston’s second straight game with a goal, and he now has three goals and one assist in seven games. In Ottawa on Monday night, Johnston’s third-period goal trimmed the Senators lead from three to two, and did not have an impact on the outcome, but it was his first goal since his debut in Nashville on Opening Night. A shot from the slot that was quickly off his stick beat Magnus Hellberg, and helped build Johnston’s confidence.

Johnston’s ability to help the Stars win games will be the ultimate deciding factor for whether he will remain in Dallas or return to Windsor in the Ontario Hockey League. So far, it is unimpeachable that Johnston is one of Dallas’ best 12 forwards. It would figure that the goal-scoring would come later for a teenager learning the NHL, and its much better goaltenders. But it’s arrived early for the 2021 first-round pick.
