Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has criticized the spread of online misinformation and threats targeting government minister Jess Phillips, following inflammatory remarks by Elon Musk.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer condemned the spread of lies and misinformation online, particularly in relation to a top U.K. minister. He spoke out after Elon Musk , the founder of SpaceX and owner of social media platform X, made inflammatory accusations against Jess Phillips , one of Starmer ’s safeguarding ministers. Musk has been spreading conspiracy theories on X, demanding Phillips ' imprisonment and labeling her a “rape genocide apologist”.
He also criticized Starmer for his handling of child grooming gangs during his time as director of public prosecutions. Starmer stated that Phillips does not need him to defend her but that he is prepared to call out the spread of harmful content that threatens individuals. He emphasized that those spreading lies and misinformation are not concerned with victims but with self-promotion. Starmer also addressed the recent focus on child grooming gangs, characterizing it as an attempt to incite fear and violence. He defended Phillips' work in protecting victims of sexual abuse and stated that she has done more than those criticizing her could ever imagine.
