Most cases of the 'silent' infection happen within a baby's first two days of life
The most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborns is group B streptococcus , an infection that isn't routinely tested for in the UK.
"Group B strep is the most common cause of severe infection, including sepsis and meningitis, in newborn babies, yet people are not routinely told about it during pregnancy. This isn't good enough," she says. "Group B strep awareness is a matter of life and death," says Plumb. "By shining a spotlight on this silent infection, we can save precious lives and spare families from unnecessary heartache."
