I’ve been writing about video games, television and movies for Forbes for over 10 years, and you may have seen my reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
I was curious to see how many people might return to Starfield in the wake of what is most definitely its biggest update since release, a large-scale patch that does things like add maps, more building options, ship decorations, survival aspects and better performance.
The result? Well, there are only a handful of mechanisms to figure this out, but there has been at least some sort of surge, though we don’t know how long it will last., the playercount started increasing as the patch launched on May 15, and now the game has peaked at 11,933 players yesterday on Sunday, usually the highest concurrent day of the week.
Now, it depends if you measure it against last Sunday, pre-patch, which at 9,047 players, would be about a 30% increase, or the higher Sunday before that, which was 10,139 players, about a 14% increase. Either way, yeah, it went up.
I’ve said before that this update is probably best consumed by new Starfield players who will have access to really key things like city maps, better performance and detailed difficulty options from the start. There isn’t a whole lot for existing players to return for other than ship decoration, if you’re into that, or messing around with the survival settings, also, if you’re into that.
