With renovations at Jones Hall set to resume at season’s end, the Houston Symphony in July will again move a few blocks west for another round of Summer Sounds at the Hobby Center, the orchestra announced Tuesday. Presented by Stella Artois, the series begins July 7 and 8 with The Music of Queen, a tribute to the grandiose rockers behind “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Somebody to Love,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and many other hits. Standing in for the late Freddie Mercury will be Mig Ayesa, a finalist on the reality-competition show “Rock Star: INXS”; classical/pop crossover specialist Brent Havens conducts.
On July 28 and 29, the orchestra will perform John Williams’ Oscar-winning score to George Lucas’ path-breaking 1977 space opera in"Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert," a perennial crowd-pleaser so popular a Saturday matinee has been added to the evening performances. Costumes are encouraged. In June, the orchestra will also resume its Neighborhood Series and return to Miller Outdoor Theater; programming for those dates is TBD. The symphony is also gearing up to announce its 2023-24 season March 29.
