After years of speculation, Lucasfilm has officially confirmed Lars Mikkelsen as the live-action Grand Admiral Thrawn, villain of The Mandalorian era.

Lucasfilm has finally confirmed who will play Star Wars' Grand Admiral Thrawn in live-action. Created by legendary science-fiction author Timothy Zahn, Grand Admiral Thrawn was one of the most compelling villains of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Lucasfilm has now confirmed Lars Mikkelsen will play Grand Admiral Thrawn in the live-action Disney+ TV shows, bringing one of the greatest villains of the Expanded Universe to life at last. Mikkelsen was revealed in the role through an extended Ahsoka trailer, played exclusively for Star Wars Celebration attendees, including Screen Rant. He had previously voiced the character in Star Wars Rebels and was the subject of much Ahsoka fancasting prior to this official confirmation. When brought out on stage to a tremendous reaction from the audience, Mikkelsen got emotional and thanked the fans, noting he'd never been on a set with as much passion as Ahsoka.

This return is clearly taking place in The Mandalorian era. Rosario Dawson was introduced as the live-action Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars Rebels season 2, and she name-dropped Thrawn as the leader of a resurgent Imperial Remnant. Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have teased that their Disney+ TV shows in this period are building up to some sort of major event, and it's reasonable to assume Thrawn is the main villain.

The casting of Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn is therefore a major step forward in Lucasfilm's plans. This is no minor casting decision; Thrawn, a major character from the Expanded Universe, will essentially come to define this entire part of the Star Wars timeline. It will be thrilling to learn more of his future.
