In Star Wars 26, the franchise doubles down on the massive amount of life lost on the Death Stars, confirming the presence of entire families on the battle stations. It seems the Rebel death toll includes many unarguable innocents.
The latest issue of Marvel's Star Wars doubles down on the dark truth about the Death Star which was notably brought up in The Mandalorian. While both of the Empire's battle stations were devastating tools of terror to subjugate the galaxy, they required millions of people to build and operate them. As such, the fact that both Death Stars were blown up by the Rebellion in the name of peace comes with a tragic fact that's rarely considered.
Previously in Marvel's Star Wars series currently set after the events of The Empire Strikes Back, the Rebellion has finally regrouped following the Battle of Hoth where the Empire forced them to scatter across the galaxy. Now, the Rebel Fleet is finally ready to continue the war against the Empire in earnest, beginning with a bombing run on a military parade during Imperial Unity Day as seen in the new Star Wars #26 from Charles Soule and Andrés Genolet.
While the destruction of the Empire's battle stations are seen as major victories for the Rebellion and the galaxy at large, the loss of life taken in the process is rarely thought about. This was a criticism about the Death Stars noted in the 2nd season of The Mandalorian with the confirmation that "millions of people died while the galaxy cheered".
While this concept needs to be weighed against the far more devastating purpose of the Death Stars themselves and the destruction of Alderaan, this issue of Star Wars continues to make the point from The Mandalorian that the Rebels were far from perfect. Innocents died on both sides, and war is still war even if it's in the stars. Casualties are often unavoidable.
