Star Trek Director Jonathan Frakes describes the upcoming Strange New Worlds & Lower Decks crossover: “It is a flat-out comedy. I got to say, it’s a big swing. But they’re not afraid of big swings.”
Actor and director, Jonathan Frakes, reveals that the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crossover with the animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks, will be a comedy. Alex Kurtzman's 2018 rebranding of the long-running multi-generational science-fiction franchise saw the birth of multiple new Star Trek shows for fans of all ages to the adult-oriented animated show, Lower Decks, and the franchise's live-action return to episodic storytelling with Strange New Worlds.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with TrekMovie, Frakes explained that the upcoming Strange New Worlds crossover episode with Lower Decks will be a comedy. The former Star Trek: The Next Generation star, who has reprised his role on Lower Decks, is set to direct the episode. Frakes revealed the episode will be completely comedic in nature, calling it "hysterical.
"It is a flat-out comedy. I got to say, it’s a big swing. But they’re not afraid of big swings. I think that’s one of the reasons this show is so successful, don’t you?"How A Crossover Between The Two Shows Can Work Due to the episodic nature of Strange New Worlds, a one-off outlandish crossover is narratively possible without losing the audience.
Following the announcement of the Star Trek crossover, speculation was rampant as fans discussed how such a premise would be accomplished. Some figured that the Lower Decks starship, the USS Cerritos, would solely exist in one medium, either live-action or animated, and the two crews would naturally meet during a mission, similar to Riker appearing only as an animated character in Lower Decks.
As Lower Decks creator, Mike McMahan, previously stated that the show exists within the vast Star Trek canon and does not break it at all, using both animation and live-action for the episode seems puzzling. If the critical acclaim of both Star Trek shows is any indication, the highly-anticipated crossover will be handled with care, properly transitioning the cast of Lower Decks into live-action with a logical reason.
