We chat with StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds cinematographer Benji Bakshi about creating stunning visuals for StrangeNewWorlds season 2, building alien environments, working with the Volume, and the status of season 3:
As one of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' cinematographers, Benji Bakshi is responsible for the incredible visuals and environments of some of season 2's best episodes.
Benji Bakshi on Creating Strange New Worlds Season 2's Planets & Environments Screen Rant: One of the best things about Strange New Worlds is that it's episodic, and each episode is its own genre. It's one of the main things that makes it stand out from all the other Star Trek shows and makes it really feel like Star Trek. It's a different alien and a different problem every week.
Benji Bakshi: There are both. The challenges are that you're always doing what's called blending. There's a discrepancy sometimes between the virtual world and the physical set that you have. And we're always trying to make sure that it's cohesive.
Strange New Worlds has probably the most beautiful sets in Star Trek. You have the bridge, and Pike’s quarters, which are like a $3 million apartment I want to live in, and you have that brand-new bar, which is beautiful. Is every set in Strange New Worlds also augmented by AR wall? Benji Bakshi: Well, it was a blizzard. Anson was in a blizzard. So we were all inside behind some windows trying not to get totally bombarded with snow. And I believe they left [the snow] in. I mean, there was precipitation going on, which is fine, right? Why not? The weather in Toronto is very challenging. And it's, I think, a good thing that a sci-fi show like this isn't reliant on trying to schedule around that sort of stuff.
