The first Star Trek TV movie, 'Section 31,' starring Michelle Yeoh, has achieved a dismal 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest-rated entry in the franchise's history. Critics have been particularly harsh, marking a stark contrast to the franchise's usual positive reception. This poor performance could potentially signal the end of Paramount+'s experiment with TV movie projects for Star Trek.
Star Trek : Section 31, the first feature-length TV movie for the iconic sci-fi franchise, has landed on Rotten Tomatoes with a disappointing 21% score, marking the lowest rating ever achieved by any Star Trek film or series. Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and written by Craig Sweeny, the Paramount+ title serves as a spinoff of the five-season run of Star Trek : Discovery (2017-2024).
The movie stars Michelle Yeoh, the recipient of the 2023 Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once, reprising her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou from the Mirror Universe. This dismal reception is a stark contrast to the franchise's usual positive reception across various mediums. Out of the two dozen television shows and films that have been reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes, only seven have earned a Rotten score (59% or lower), while 16 have scores of 80% or higher, and eight have been deemed Certified Fresh. The previous lowest-rated Star Trek entries were 1989's Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (23%) and 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis (38%). This historically low rating for Star Trek: Section 31 could potentially signal the end of the Paramount+ TV movie experiment for the franchise. While no other TV movie projects were officially announced prior to Section 31's release, the negative response could deter future attempts. This is especially true if audiences align with the critics' disapproval. Notably, this bad reception coincides with the often-cited 'Oscar curse,' where acting winners sometimes follow their award with a poorly reviewed film. While Yeoh seemed to have largely avoided this curse with her subsequent roles in A Haunting in Venice (75%) and Wicked (88%), Star Trek: Section 31 represents a significant dip. However, her upcoming projects in Wicked: For Good and others should hopefully help to restore her Rotten Tomatoes standing
