Star Trek star Zoe Saldaña explains why Trekkies are so special. 'I think it was mirroring the kind of world that people wanted to see at that time in the ‘60s so it just has a very special place in people’s hearts.'
Star Trek star Zoe Saldaña offers a very thoughtful explanation regarding why Trekkies are so special. First airing in the 1960s, the beloved franchise has undergone a number of changes and iterations over the past 50 years. Saldaña made her franchise debut as Uhura in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot film and would reprise her role for two subsequent sequels.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview on Hot Ones, the popular YouTube interview show from First We Feast, Saldaña warmly shares what makes Trekkies so special. The Star Trek actor expresses deep admiration for the franchise fanbase and praises how fans from different generations all come together over their shared love for the movies and TV shows.
“I think that Trekkies take it far more seriously. They’re lovely. I think it was mirroring the kind of world that people wanted to see at that time in the ‘60s so it just has a very special place in people’s hearts. And there’s something really beautiful about seeing a grandfather, father, and a son, or a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter all coming together and enjoying this.
Although Star Trek 4 doesn't seem like it will be entering production anytime soon, most of the cast seems interested in returning, including Saldaña, Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Karl Urban as McCoy, and John Cho as Sulu. Most of the stars have also, however, expressed that they're largely in the dark about the project and have yet to actually read a script.
A fourth Kelvin timeline film faces a number of big hurdles, but it's still certainly possible that it will still eventually get made. It seems likely that the sequel won't be happening anytime soon, but the cast's passion for the franchise and their interest in returning for Star Trek 4 is a promising sign.
